On 7 September 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Nuuk, Greenland. 

During her visit, she met with Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenlandic Prime Minister, and Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister. Together, they held a joint press conference to mark the signing of the EU-Greenland Joint Declaration. 

In her address, Ursula von der Leyen thanked Greenland and Denmark for their hospitality, reflecting on her return two years after her first visit to deliver concrete results. She highlighted three main achievements: the signing of the aforementioned Joint Declaration, which aimed to strengthen the ties between the EU and Greenland, a €200 million EU-Greenland Partnership Package focused on connectivity, clean energy, and critical raw materials, and the first deliverables that were ready to be implemented under the package. These included satellite connectivity projects, hydropower investment and mining ventures such as Malmbjerg and Amitsoq. She also announced plans to increase EU funding to €530 million by 2034 to support housing and sustainable tourism, and to expand Erasmus+ participation. Finally, she reaffirmed EU solidarity with Greenland’s sovereignty and its commitment to an upcoming Arctic Strategy.
