On 7 September 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Jozef SÃkela, European Commissioner for International Partnerships, travelled to Nuuk, Greenland.
During a doorstep interview, Jozef SÃkela recalled that Greenland had requested a stronger, more strategic partnership with the EU in May. He confirmed that a joint declaration with Greenland and Denmark had formalised this intention and announced that Ursula von der Leyen would unveil a partnership package centred on local communities, focusing on connectivity, digitalisation, and economic activities. He concluded by saying that the mission informed an updated Arctic strategy, which emphasised the importance of peace, security, economic resilience, climate, and people.
