On 7 September 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Nuuk, Greenland. 

During her visit, she met with Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenlandic Prime Minister, and Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister. Together, they signed the Joint Declaration on the EU-Greenland Relationship, which was intended to strengthen relations and cooperation between the EU and Greenland, based on shared interests and values, and was a long-term commitment. This included cooperation in several areas, such as education and training, infrastructure development and construction, ocean governance, natural resources, the production of safe and sustainable low-carbon energy and technologies, and connectivity.
