Visit of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to Greenland
On 6 and 7 September 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, went to Nuuk to meet with leaders from the Kingdom of Denmark, including Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenlandic Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister, and Beinir Johannesen, Faroese Prime Minister. This official visit was marked by the signing of a joint EU–Greenland declaration and the announcement of a €200 million funding package under the Global Gateway strategy. These substantial investments are aimed at the energy transition, local infrastructure and securing supply chains for critical raw materials, reaffirming Europe’s strategic foothold in the Arctic in the face of foreign geopolitical influences.
