On 6 and 7 September 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Nuuk, Greenland. 

During her visit, she met with Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenlandic Prime Minister, and Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the ties between the EU and Greenland, given the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region. The leaders discussed the main challenges and opportunities facing Greenland and the wider Arctic region, as well as concrete initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. The EU also reviewed its Arctic policy to ensure it could respond to current and future developments. The officials also had the opportunity to take a boat trip to Qoornoq, where they were able to talk to local people and see for themselves the impact of climate change in the region.
