Visit of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to Estonia
On 30 August 2025, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, went to Tallinn, in Estonia, where she met Kristen Michal, Estonian Prime Minister. The President exchanged with Estonian Defence Forces and NATO military personnel. The President met with Estonian defense forces and NATO personnel, emphasizing the need to bolster European defense against Russian aggression. The conflict in Ukraine has validated Estonia's warnings, making it crucial to maintain robust support for Ukraine and enhance European defense. The EU will continue to provide political, economic, and military aid to Ukraine, while intensifying sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting its "shadow fleet". The use of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's reconstruction is also under consideration. The Baltic Sea's defense is a priority, as Russia and its proxies probe Europe's resilience in the region. In response, the EU has launched an €800 billion defense industrial plan, featuring a €150 billion joint procurement instrument called SAFE. This initiative will enable the production of European defense capabilities, including drones and air defense systems. As one of NATO's top defense contributors in terms of GDP, Estonia is already setting an example. The European Commission will present a defense roadmap in October, outlining the gaps to be addressed and the necessary funding. By 2030, the goal is to strengthen European defense through targeted investments in defense capabilities and enhanced cooperation among Member States.
