Kristalina Georgieva was born in 1953, in Sofia, Bulgaria. She graduated in Economic Sciences and was Vice-President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Group since 2008. Previously, she was a World Bank expert for the Environment since 1993. She has been designated Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, after the resignation earlier in January 2009, of the first-choice Member of the EC, Rumiana Jeleva, former Bulgarian Minister for Foreign Affairs. Each Member designate of the EC faced a hearing with MEPs. The committee covering the area of competence of each Member of the EC, has been holding hearings from 11 January to 3 February 2010.
