Global Gateway: The Lobito Corridor - Zambia
Stretching from the Atlantic coast of Angola through to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia’s Copperbelt, the Lobito Corridor has the potential to become Africa’s first transcontinental transport link.By reducing freight transit time from Zambia/DRC to the sea from over a month to just one week, the Lobito Corridor is transforming how goods move across central and southern Africa. It is opening markets for farmers, small businesses and industries while creating new jobs and lowering carbon emissions.Through Global Gateway, the European Union and its Member States are mobilising over €2 billion of investments in the people and places that bring the corridor to life – improving transport, boosting local economies, and creating lasting benefits for communities along the way.
These pictures include EU-funded activities around the Lobito Corridor in Zambia.
View of the power plant - ENGIE Energy Access — Africa's leading Pay-As-You-Go and mini-grid solutions provider — is constructing 15 solar mini-grids in Zambia's Eastern Province as a core part of the EU-funded IAEREP programme. Five of the 15 planned sites in Sinda District are already operational, with connections made to local farming businesses, schools, health facilities, and productive-use appliances such as hammermills and cooking oil extractors. The EU allocated €6 million in Global Gateway grants to ENGIE's off-grid unit for the programme, with additional financing structured through the Facility for Energy Inclusion. Across the full IAEREP commitment, ENGIE aims to deliver 71 solar mini-grids in Zambia, providing clean energy to more than 70,000 people in rural communities.

Under this programme, German company Solar23 (Renwasol/Solar23) has deployed solar mini-grid sites across Zambia's Central Province, with all four sites finalised and household connections completed. The installations power homes, schools, health centres and local businesses, bringing reliable renewable electricity to communities previously off the national grid. The project exemplifies how EU Global Gateway investment in energy access directly supports the socioeconomic potential of corridor communities.
