Global Gateway: The Lobito Corridor - Democratic Republic of Congo
Stretching from the Atlantic coast of Angola through to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia’s Copperbelt, the Lobito Corridor has the potential to become Africa’s first transcontinental transport link.By reducing freight transit time from Zambia/DRC to the sea from over a month to just one week, the Lobito Corridor is transforming how goods move across central and southern Africa. It is opening markets for farmers, small businesses and industries while creating new jobs and lowering carbon emissions.
Through Global Gateway, the European Union and its Member States are mobilising over €2 billion of investments in the people and places that bring the corridor to life – improving transport, boosting local economies, and creating lasting benefits for communities along the way. These photos include EU-funded activities around the Lobito Corridor in Democratic Republic of Congo.

View of the rehabilitation of Route Nationale 1 - Financed at €180 million by the European Union through the 11th European Development Fund, this rehabilitation project covers 150 km of Route Nationale 1 in the DRC, from Kamuesha in Kasaï Province to Kananga, the capital of Kasaï-Central. Works on the 150 km stretch include earthworks, pavement in bituminous concrete, hydraulic drainage, road signage, and the construction of three major bridges over the Kaluebo (35m), Miawo (62m), and Lulua rivers (160m). RN1 is the DRC's primary east-west axis linking the Atlantic coast to the Copperbelt, making its rehabilitation a strategic complement to the Lobito Corridor rail investments. By improving road conditions in this landlocked region, the project aims to improve access to agricultural production, as well as reduce transport costs and travel time. Once fully rehabilitated, from the Atlantic to Katanga, RN1 will constitute a major corridor in Central Africa.

By improving road conditions in this landlocked region, the project aims to improve access to agricultural production, as well as reduce transport costs and travel time. Once fully rehabilitated, from the Atlantic to Katanga, RN1 will constitute a major corridor in Central Africa.
View of a mining operation training course -Implemented by Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency, this EU-funded Technical and Vocational Education and Training programme directly supports the Lobito Corridor's human capital needs in the mining heartland of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Based in Kolwezi — capital of Lualaba Province and one of the world's most significant copper and cobalt extraction centres — the project trains young people in heavy machinery operation, entrepreneurship, agrifood business, and mining sector skills. Participants also access professional internship placements, including at industrial facilities such as Bags & Sacks Katanga SARL, where trainees gain hands-on experience in manufacturing and production. This aligns with the EU's €18 million programme supporting training, employment, and entrepreneurship in mining communities along the corridor, promoting fair, transparent, and environmentally responsible value chains.

A woman learning to drive at a driving school - Also implemented by Enabel in Lubumbashi, the Mama Vroom project tackles gender exclusion in one of the corridor's most critical economic sectors: heavy freight transport. The programme trains women as heavy truck drivers and supports their placement with participating companies operating along the Lobito Corridor. By opening a profession that has historically excluded women, Mama Vroom contributes to both economic inclusion and the corridor's broader logistics workforce needs.
