
From 20 to 23 November 2025, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, went to Johannesburg, in South Africa, to participate in the G20 Summit. The trip began with the EU-South Africa Leaders' Meeting, which was the first G20 meeting to take place on African soil, followed by the EU-African Union (AU) Summit in Angola. During her visit, the President met with Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to discuss a new clean trade and investment partnership, as well as new deals on raw materials and projects under South Africa's €12 billion Global Gateway package. She also co-hosted with Cyril Ramaphosa the final pledging event of the 'Scaling Up Renewables in Africa' campaign, which aimed to mobilize investments in clean energy and access to electricity for millions of people in Africa. Ursula von der Leyen participated in the G20 Summit, where she attended working sessions on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, disaster risk reduction, climate change, and critical minerals. She also held meetings with global leaders, including Mark Carney, Canadian Prime Minister, and discussed stronger EU-Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) cooperation. The President then traveled to Luanda, Angola, for the EU-AU Summit, where she delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the Europe-Africa Business Forum and took part in the official opening of the EU-AU Summit. She participated in thematic sessions on peace, security, and governance, as well as prosperity, people, migration, and mobility.
