On 16 September 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, delivered her 2026 State of the European Union address before the Members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. 

During her speech, she proposed a new ‘associate member’ status for Canada, highlighting the need for deeper strategic partnerships. In this context, she invited Mark Carney, Canadian Prime Minister, to attend.
