when more than 650 30,000 hectares of forest burned in Europe this summer.

Where was Friedrich Merz when grain farmers in Europe lost around €2 billion of their revenue in a heatwave in June?

where were European leaders when 35,000 Europeans died excess heat-related deaths in Europe this summer?

We didn't see an emergency task force, we didn't see ad hoc Council meetings, there was no immediate action plan.

Colleagues, this is not enough, this is unacceptable. We have to do better.

Now you're going to tell me, well, these leaders were at home dealing with the crisis, they actually had to do a lot in order to keep track,

and that's true, but honestly, I do not buy that response anymore,

because this is a crisis of European and of global magnitude.

It affects Olof our citizens, and we will only be able to solve it if we work together,

and our leaders know that, but they are avoiding the topic even worse sometimes they are weak.

The Greer Deal, the attacks on the nature restoration law, the opening of climate legislation,

the absolute lack of determination in adaptation laws,

Not only do we have to stop this, the deregulation and the attacks on the Greer Deal,

but we have to investigate why the European institutions were so weak.

On enforcing the Greer Deal,

and that is why my group is going to ask for an inquiry committee into the shortcomings of executing what we had already decided in the European Union in the Greer Deal.

We owe this accountability to the firefighters, to the nurses, to the doctors who sometimes gave their lives,

but who gave their energy and who very often gave their livelihoods over the summer.

We are going to hold the people who are responsible accountable.

What we need now is a way forward.

First, a clear plan and a timeline on how to phase out fossil fuels.

Second, a windfall profit tax to make polluters pay instead of our consumers,

and third, and there we see something from the.

Commission a climate adaptation plan that actually makes us better prepared for the next time with the necessary funding attached to the MFF.

These issues have to be at the absolute top of our agenda right now.

For Olof this, for all the challenges in the world ahead of us, we will need allies,

and let me be clear, we are up against powerful opponents Trump, the tech oligarchs, Putin.

Many powerful people are doing everything they can to destroy the rules based world order we are living in.

But there is one mistakes that we absolutely We must not make, and that is to believe that we are powerless. We are not.

Europe is strong and Europe can be even stronger, and we have powerful friends in the world.

One of them is sitting right next to us.

Believing and acting as if we are powerless will mean surrendering to the bullies of the world, and we will not surrender. We will unite, colleagues, as Europe, Europe.

Let us use all our power in order to give hope to all the people in the world that need it right now, because the demagogues, the dictators,

the autocrats of this world have not won, and we choose to stand up to them as Euros,

as Europe and with our friends around the world. Thank you very much.
