ANNOUNCEMENT - 25 years since 9/11
Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to our midday briefing.
Today marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks on 11th September 2001,
a day when the world watched in horror and disbelief as the Twin Towers fell in New York.
25 years on, we remember the nearly 3000 people who lost their lives that morning.
As well as their families and loved ones, we are remembering them today.
Those who carried out these attacks sought to spread fear far beyond New York,
Virginia and Pennsylvania.
But as President von der Leyen said, 25 years later, we know that they failed.
Our democracies endured, our societies remained free,
and the ideology of terror did not prevail.
I invite you to read the statement by the President, which we published this morning,
or actually yesterday already, and is available in our press corner.
