On 17 July 2025, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, went to Iceland, where she engaged in discussions with Kristrún Frostadóttir, Icelandic Prime Minister, on the Arctic's geopolitical significance, security measures, and climate action. Her visit commenced with an aerial tour of the Sólheimajökull Glacier, which has been impacted by rising temperatures. She then proceeded to Grindavík, meeting with representatives from the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue. The President also inspected the specialized protective barriers designed to safeguard the Blue Lagoon and the Svartsengi power plant, demonstrating Iceland's preparedness against volcanic eruptions and potential lava flows. Later, she joined Prime Minister Frostadóttir and officials from Iceland and NATO at the Keflavik Naval Air Station to discuss security and defense operations, including submarine and air defense systems, as well as civil protection.
