Mark and Ursula, commissioners, hello everyone.

First of all, thank you to Prime Minister Mark Carney for your warm welcome here in Montreal.

Europe and Canada, well, there's an ocean between us, but it's bringing us closer.

The Atlantic has meant that we've shared values and history. And it's inspiring our ambitions.

We have just concluded this summit, and this demonstrates this in a striking way.

Let's take a moment to remember how we got to this stage 50 years ago,

1976.

Canada and European communities signed their first bilateral agreement.

10 years ago, our agreement Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement meant that we were entering a new stage,

and it reinforced our economic connections and our political connections.

Today we are choosing together something that's new, an ally.

For the future and an association that is even closer to consolidate our joint prosperity and to reinforce our security and to give a new dimension to our political cooperation.

This alliance has the objective of producing real results for our citizens,

for our businesses, and for our workers.

And for this to happen we have to keep our promises. Our economic partnership is functional.

Since CETA came into force, trade between the EU and Canada has increased by about 80%,

and we intend to go even further.

We are establishing a new agreement on digital trade.

We are strengthening, bolstering our investments in our respective economies.

We are moving towards a better mutual recognition of credentials,

and we are deepening our cooperation around competitiveness and economic security. We are making our partnership a growth. Jobs driver.

Now we are implementing this partnership around security and defense through our industrial cooperation that's even stronger and through Canada's participation in our SAFE program.

It is the first non-European country to join it,

and we are working hand in hand to support Ukraine given the war of aggression led by Russia for almost 5.

I would like to acknowledge the decision made by the Prime Minister to contribute to supporting Ukraine,

the Ukraine's support alone.

This is a strong message that is being sent on our joint collaboration for Ukraine for as long as is needed.

Horizon Europe. The. Strategic. That.

You. Great news. Responsibility.
