In Bruz (France), the Utopia building reimagines urban living through shared spaces that encourage connection, collaboration and more sustainable ways of living. Flow, a follow-up to Ripple (2025), is a documentary film that looks closely at the stories and people behind six New European Bauhaus (NEB) projects in urban and rural areas across the EU: Hamburg (Germany), Bruz (France), Imperia (Italy), Gabrovo (Bulgaria), Frasta (Greece) and Helsinki (Finland). Local communities in these places act as laboratories for today's pressing challenges, and their projects, at different stages of development, show what this can look like in practice.

Utopia is a project ordered by a mayor, the mayor of Bruz.
And what he liked a lot was the slightly utopian character
that offered another way of living together.
For some time now, we have entered a new period
filled with a lot of uncertainties
particularly climatic, economic and social.
We believe that
we have to support these changes,
and that to be prepared for all these changes,
we will need mutual aid,
sharing and social connections
that Utopia offers.
We have a common terrace, a common room,
a concierge's office, a shared space.
There are more than 1000 square meters
in which you can exchange, share, meet.
I see that the kiwis there are starting to cling to the railings.
That's kind of the essence of this building, it's to be in the...
... in the foliage, in the trees.
We came from the countryside, we wanted to be closer to a city.
And when we saw this concept with this garden, it was the compromise
between the average apartment and the house.
Ah, it's okay if you water me, it's good.
You can hear the birds,
you don't feel like you're in the city.
For our travels, we go by bike, we go on foot.
We have drastically reduced car usage.
It really is our cocoon.
It's like our bubble.
And the space is safe, too.
The architecture is designed so that all the buildings face the courtyard.
If you leave a child in the courtyard,
they’re safe inside.
It gives life, it's beautiful.
I feel good here actually.
I think I would have a hard time leaving here.
Architecture offers possibilities.
We cannot force people to live together,
but encourage them with architectural devices
that make these practices possible.
It’s an added experience
that helps us develop the flexibility and expertise
to handle complex projects.
We obviously hope that it will be beneficial
and that it will allow us
to carry out other projects of this type in Europe.
