Parkly is a Helsinki-based startup (Finland) designing modular urban furniture with and for people. Its flexible, interchangeable system transforms urban spaces into pocket parks, bringing more greenery and opportunities to connect into neighbourhoods.
Flow, a follow-up to Ripple (2025), is a documentary film that looks closely at the stories and people behind six New European Bauhaus (NEB) projects in urban and rural areas across the EU: Hamburg (Germany), Bruz (France), Imperia (Italy), Gabrovo (Bulgaria), Frasta (Greece) and Helsinki (Finland). Local communities in these places act as laboratories for today's pressing challenges, and their projects, at different stages of development, show what this can look like in practice.

In our cities,
planning has been focusing
more on the functionality of different spaces,
streets, roads and squares
rather than the human aspect.
Helsinki has many parks and green areas,
but our streets and squares can be quite grey
and we want to change that.
With our modular urban furniture, we can create
tiny pocket parks to urban landscapes.
We want to bring more greenery and places for people
to enjoy their neighborhoods.
We are talking about a variety of components
that can be combined in different formations.
So it's an evolving and interchangeable system.
We asked our pupils what they want for their school yard,
and they said that they want more possibilities to sit on
and also more green.
They voted for the colour,
then they built them themselves over here,
then other kids planted the seeds.
They're getting used every day intensely.
Before, there was nothing.
It was a little bit boring.
I like it much more
that we have more colours and, like, more fun.
I was voting for this colour.
I like that you can sit on it
and just chill.
We design for and with people
by giving the most flexibility to our system.
This system thinking also helps us
manufacture our components relatively quickly.
And, as we are reducing the amount of pieces
to the absolute minimum,
and re-utilize them in many different products and designs,
we can also do this very cost effectively.
We deliberately chose the most durable materials to work with,
surface treated metal and thermo ash treated wood
that is lasting very well the outdoor conditions
in Finland, but also in the rest of the European climates.
We come here now often with my child
and usually there are her school friends here.
So it’s really like a place for the community.
I just picked up my kid from the violin class
and we are here spending some time.
Without this furniture being here,
this is just an ordinary street with cars.
Now it's more beautiful.
It's a place to spend time outside.
I'm happy when I see more colour and enjoyment
and vibrancy in public spaces.
Parkly has started here in Helsinki,
but it's already in use in more than 20 cities across Europe.
And I want to see it everywhere.
