On 27 October 2026, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, and Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, took part in a press conference on strengthening Frontex and the digitalisation of the return process in Brussels, Belgium. During the press conference, they underlined that the European Union had made significant progress on migration, with irregular border crossings having more than halved over the previous two years. They stressed that the external borders still needed to be strengthened in view of rapidly changing geopolitical and security challenges. A regulation to digitalise return, readmission and reintegration was proposed to simplify and accelerate the management of returns across the EU.
