On 27 October 2026, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, and Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, held a joint press conference in Brussels, Belgium, to address the strengthening of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, and the digitalisation of the return process.
The new rules aimed to enable the Agency to act more effectively, as well as making it easier for Member States to make full use of its tools and services. Notable novelties included a reinforced Standing Corps, a new European Border and Return Reserve, and a Quick Reaction Force to intervene in crisis situations. There was also a new Online Monitoring Centre for the early detection of potential threats. Furthermore, a new Return Coordination Centre was set up to facilitate returns from third countries.
