A significant share of the energy we produce is lost before it can be used.
That’s because much of our energy still comes from combustion.
It’s inefficient.
And it keeps us dependent on imported fossil fuels,
making us vulnerable to price shocks and global instability.
So, what if there was a better way?
A way to use energy more efficiently,
with far less waste, lower emissions,
and more control over how it’s produced and used.
That’s what electrification is about.
Using clean electricity instead of combustion to power our lives.
It means relying less on imported fossil fuels,
and more on energy we produce ourselves.
Today, more than two thirds of electricity in the EU
comes from renewables and nuclear.
But much of our overall energy use still depends on fossil fuels.
Moving away from that dependency can make us more resilient
and help bring energy bills down.
This shift is already underway.
In transport, where electricity powers more than just cars,
from buses to ferries,
and where vehicles can even feed electricity back into the grid.
In industry, where it can power a wide range of processes,
including heating and cooling,
across sectors like food, textiles, and paper manufacturing.
And in buildings, where switching from
fossil-based heating to heat pumps,
can significantly reduce energy use and costs.
Most of what we need to electrify is already available today,
but we are not going fast enough.
To accelerate the transition to clean electricity,
the European Commission is working to boost electrification
in transport, heating and cooling, and industry.
Electrification is the future,
but the future is already here.
