On 24 August 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, delivered a speech in Brussels, Belgium, during which she marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) conference and exhibition.Ursula von der Leyen stressed the importance of cooperation in responding to energy crises, noting that Europe had faced two energy crises in the previous five years. She stated that the EU had diversified its energy supply chains with trusted partners such as Norway and had prioritised the transition away from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy sources, including solar and wind power. Ursula von der Leyen added that the European Commission had put forward an Electrification Action Plan to end dependence on fossil fuels and reduce exposure to price shocks. She underlined the need to ensure energy security and to work together to cut emissions, create new industries and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness. In addition, she noted that the next generation of clean technologies should not only be used in Europe, but also designed and produced here.
