DEFENCE - Latvia: Q&A
Hello, Angela Skujins from Euronews.
I have a question for Thomas, it's about defense.
It's regarding the resignation of the Latvian defense minister over the weekend in regards to that drone incursion on Thursday where I believe 3 drones entered Latvian airspace,
2 were shot down or came down.
Anyway, I want to know what the failures here were when it comes to drone defenses and the €3.4 billion safe loan. How confident is the Commission?
That this money will actually be used to defend drones for this country. Thank you. Thanks, Angela, and good afternoon.
So, first, no comments on national politics, as you can imagine, that's not for us to comment on. We speak on behalf of the Commission.
We have been clear when it comes to drone incursions.
We always said that it's first and foremost for the national authorities to identify these threats and to assess from where they are coming from.
Now, what this does highlight is indeed the need for the EU flagships that we have put on the table,
including the drone defense initiative, for example, or the air shield.
So definitely this shows that we have to advance on these. Flagships now unsafe.
Yes, we definitely believe that safe will be one of the issues, one of the, of the possibilities to support our member states, absolutely,
and here to support at scale and EU-wide our European defense industry, to create a single market for defense,
to create joint procurement with one objective which is also to outproduce Russia. Thank you.
Other questions, Thomas, you have a follow-up, and Angela? So interested.
Just a quick one, do you have a timeline for safe when it comes to Latvia, when that will be finalized in Riga, thank you. Thank you.
So we are, currently advancing on the different, loan agreements, so we have sent the template to member states.
We have received the loan agreements back from, 10 member states, if I'm not mistaken, Latvia is currently. Not among these. That's not an issue.
They have time to advance like all member states.
The Commission on its side is definitely ready, as you have seen last week with Poland and Lithuania,
to move to the next step and to sign with the member states who are ready to sign the loan agreement with the Commission.
Thank you. Other question is to Thomas. Yes.
