Sailing Forward: Sea Basin strategies for Europe’s blue future

Show transcript

Europe’s sea basins are connected.

And so are the challenges they face.

From protecting marine ecosystems to supporting coastal economies.

But there is a solution: working together through the Sea Basin Strategies.

These strategies help stakeholders connect, shape project ideas,

and make better use of available funding.

They help build a sustainable blue economy

tailored to each sea basin.

Across Europe, cooperation is already delivering results.

In the Atlantic, for example, the EU-funded AquaWind project

combines aquaculture with offshore renewable energy,

making a smarter use of marine space.

In the Black Sea, BlackNETs removes lost and abandoned

fishing nets, working with fishers and scientists.

In the WestMED sea basin, 2B-BLUE boosts innovation in blue biotechnology

through five interactive hubs that connect scientific research,

training, and businesses.

And in the North Sea, basin-level cooperation helps optimise

the use of shared sea space while protecting marine ecosystems.

By aligning national and regional efforts, Sea Basin Strategies

turn interregional cooperation into action,

across the EU and beyond.
