The blue economy has become a flourishing sector
in the EU in recent years.
To promote an innovative, competitive
and inclusive blue economy.
The European Commission supports regional cooperation
between relevant actors in EU and non-EU countries
through three Sea Basin Strategies
in the Atlantic, Black Sea and Western Mediterranean.
The Sea Basin Strategies consider each region’s specific conditions,
opportunities and challenges to best develop a strong,
sustainable blue economy through key-elements
such as circularity, innovation and resilience,
and blue investment, among others.
In 2022, the European Commission launched a common Assistance Mechanism
for the three sea basins to foster synergies and improve coordination.
A team of more than 40 experts in 17 countries facilitates the identification
and definition of shared priorities, fosters good practice sharing,
and promotes joint projects and activities among blue economy stakeholders.
Some examples of concrete achievements so far are:
Supporting the countries in the preparation of
the ministerial declarations in the WestMED
and the Atlantic sea basins.
Launching technical groups of experts, identifying relevant
needs and project support in the WestMED and Black Sea.
Nurturing 58 project ideas across sea basins
by aiding conceptualization and consortium building.
And building a thriving, sustainable blue economy community
through events and networking channels.
