Climate-neutral by 2050: The Impact of the European Green Deal

Show transcript

Our climate is

changing fast

and we are suffering the consequences

from fiercer storms to longer droughts,

rising sea levels

or soaring temperatures.

But we have a plan to deal with this.

A plan that aims to protect both people

and the planet

that is economically sound

and socially fair.

That's the European Green Deal.

The trick is

it's not only good for the planet,

but also good for our economy

because the European Green Deal

is actually our new growth model

based on a clean and circular economy.

To make it a reality,

we set ourselves targets

to become climate neutral by 2050

and be better prepared

for the impacts of climate change.

In parallel,

we are protecting and restoring

nature and biodiversity. And guess what?

We're making progress.

We've reduced emissions

in the European union

by 32.5% since 1990,

while the economy grew by almost 70%.

This shows to the rest of the world

that it is possible

to reduce CO2 emissions

and grow the economy at the same time.

And that's important,

because the rest of the world

needs to cut emissions too.

So how are we planning

to become climate neutral by 2050?

We take it step by step.

We have a first target

to reduce emissions by at least 55%

by 2030.

And we are on track.

We are replacing dirty fossil fuels

with clean and renewable sources

like wind and solar.

Just imagine sunshine powering your home.

We are also fostering the development

of innovative technologies

that we need to reduce emissions.

And we are supporting European companies

to transition a clean business model

while maintaining their competitive edge.

In addition,

we are planning to shift

to zero emission vehicles

to make transport more sustainable.

And of course, are improving

public transport networks

and boosting infrastructure

for walking and cycling.

To support the transition

to a clean economy.

We have ramped up European investments.

almost €400 billion euros

of European union funds

are financing

climate related projects.

We are also supporting

those who are more vulnerable

and face the biggest challenges to adapt.

Lets see how the European Green Deal

is making a real difference

on the ground.

Lyondell

based in Germany,

is developing a plastic recycling plant

that will run 100%

on renewable electricity.

They receive funding

from the EU's Innovation fund.

Eastern Wielkopolska,

a coal region in

Poland is upskilling workers

and creating new jobs

in clean hydrogen production.

They are supported by the EU

Just Transition Fund.

Tartalife,

winner of the Life citizen's award

reduced sea turtle

by-catch along Italian coast by 40%.

So we are making good progress in Europe,

but to protect the climate,

the rest of the world needs to act too.

So we're pushing the world to step up.

This is just a glimpse of what

we've accomplished in recent years.

From cleaning up up our air and water,

to promoting

sustainable products and fostering

innovative green technologies.

But we are not done.

Our healthier planet journey continues

for generations to come.

to Europe series.
