‘Make the connection with EU-science’ is a series of explanatory videos focusing on the scientific content and exploitation aspects of EU research projects.
The current video showcases the SEQUENCE project, which has developed electronics that operate in very low temperatures, crucial to scale up quantum computers and improve communication systems.
Why would you put a computer in the freezer?
Make the connection with EU science.
Quantum computers can help us solve complex problems,
but come with their own set of challenges.
Quantum chips must be kept in a supercooled container,
which can be a problem for the supporting electronics.
Meanwhile, the heat generated by control chips
can knock quantum components out of state.
The EU-funded SEQUENCE project
developed low-power transistors that produce little heat
and tolerate extremely low temperatures.
Making them perfect for quantum computers,
as well as exploring other strange new worlds.
