On 25 February 1998, Jacques Santer, President of the EC, received Thomas Klestil, President of Austria, at the European Commission, in Brussels. Thomas Klestil also attended part of the weekly meeting of the college. They discussed about forthcoming Austrian Presidency of the Council, on 1 July 1998, but also about Austria's specific concerns such as Alpine transit, crossborder problems, genetically modified products and the Austrian wish that the EU deal more with culture.
