Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, and Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, participated in the 49th edition of the airshow at Le Bourget airport in Paris. Siim Kallas has called for stronger collaboration on technology in order to unlock the full benefits of having a Single European Sky. He also stated that the technologies and procedures needed to achieve the Single European Sky had to be implemented in the same way across Europe as soon as possible. This was why by October 2011, the EC had to submit a proposal to the Council for making the transition to the SESAR deployment phase go smoothly, with special attention given to funding and governance.Siim Kallas highlighted the strong innovation capability of the air transport sector. Amongst them, the unmanned air systems, extremely visible at the Paris Air Show, illustrated the diversity that technology must address without compromising safety. These new technologies and procedures had to be deployed to contribute towards meeting the objectives of the Single European Sky.Antonio Tajani notably attended the signature of the final two contracts, out of six, for Galileo, Europe’s global navigation satellite programme by the European Space Agency (ESA) on behalf of the EC. The combined valued of the two contracts was 355 million €.
