Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, visited Thales and Airbus plants based in Toulouse. The aim of the visit of Siim Kallas at Thales and Airbus is to underline the importance of the EU industry to realize the ambitious goals of the EU Commission concerning transport. Strong and efficient transport systems helping to create jobs are necessary and are being developed. The Single European Sky is an initiative to reform the architecture of the European Air traffic control. Thales is a core player in SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research), the technological arm of the Single European Sky initiative and provides input for technological questions. Airbus as an engine manufacturer is a key player when it comes to define thresholds of ash concentration in the air. The volcanic ash crisis has shown that there is a need for an overhaul of the European air traffic control and it has led to a higher acceptance for political changes and reforms among political leaders in Europe.
