On 12 May 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, travelled to Copenhagen, Denmark, to deliver a speech at the Keeping Our Children and Families Safe in the AI Era Summit. The speech focused on the importance of protecting children in a digital world. Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged both the advantages and the risks of growing up in a time of rapid technological change. She highlighted the vulnerability of young people while exposed to constant judgment and pressure online. She stated that artificial intelligence could multiply risks such as sleep deprivation, depression, anxiety, self-harm, addictive behaviour, cyberbullying, grooming, exploitation and suicide. Ursula von der Leyen emphasised the European Commission's initiatives to counter these effects with the Digital Services Act, a tool that would prevent platforms from abusing market power. This tool would hold tech manufacturers responsible for the safety of their products. The Digital Fairness Act would ensure targeting addictive and harmful design practices. The speech concluded by stressing that media literacy must become a collective societal priority to empower young people in the digital age. This video shows the speech.
