On 5 October 2011, Angela Merkel, German Federal Chancellor, paid a visit to José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, in Brussels. Angela Merkel then met several Members of the Barroso II Commission. During the press point the President stressed that only through European renewal, only with more Europe, with more committed EU leadership it was possible to build confidence in the common capacity to act, and underlined that renewal required leadership and determination. It was necessary to say without ambiguity "yes" to a more united Europe, with strong Community institutions, working in close and loyal partnership with the Member States. José Manuel Barroso added that the contribution of Germany remained decisive. He also announced that he together with Angela Merkel would push for a global financial transaction tax at the G20 Summit in November 2011.
