Extracts from the statement by Siim Kallas on volcanic ash - Grimsvötn eruption
On 24 May 2011 at a press briefing in Brussels, Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, said that the volcanic ashes still remain a real safety risk to aviation.
Although Europe is partly dependent on the weather and the pattern of ash dispersion, the European Commission does not at this stage anticipate the widespread airspace closures and the prolonged disruption of 2010. Following contacts with the Hungarian Presidency, the European Commission stands ready to call a Transport Ministerial meeting if there is a need for further EU coordination.
