Last weekly meeting of the Prodi Commission, 16/11/2004 : arrivals and round table
The EC adopted a score board on State Aid in the ten new EU Member States. According to some reports appeared in the newspapers, this document demonstrates that, in 2003, public support was three times greater in these countries than in the rest of the EU and that there had been a significant rise compared to aid granted in 2000. This aid increased from EUR 4 bn to EUR 8 bn the year leading up to enlargement. The biggest spenders are the Czech Republic, with public subsidies more than 7 times the average spent in the older Member States - 0.39% of GDP. Estonia, on the other hand granted aid that reached less than a third of this average - 0.11% of its GDP. In spring, the Commission is planning to publish a report on State Aid in the 25 EU Member States. The Commission also adopted a Council proposal for an amended mandate for international negotiations on the site that the future thermonuclear experimental fusion reactor (ITER) is expected to be based. The Commission advised Member States to pursue negotiations with Japan and the four other partners (USA, China, south Korea and Russia) to get ITER built in Cadarache in France, while keeping the option open of going forward without them if an agreement is not possible.
