Visit of Felipe González, EU Special Representative for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to the EC: extracts from the joint press briefing with Jacques Santer, President of the EC
On 8 May 1998, Felipe González, EU Special Representative for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and Jacques Santer, President of the EC, held a joint press briefing following their meeting, at the European Commission, in Brussels. On 7 May, a common position was adopted in the light of the failure by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Serbia to meet the conditions set out in Common Position 98/240/CFSP, and continuing repression in Kosovo. It provided for funds held abroad by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Serbian Governments to be frozen. Felipe Gonzalez and Jacques Santer outlined negotiations with Belgrade and reaction of the EU, in the framework of the mandate of Felipe Gonzalez in the Balkans. Felipe Gonzalez also evoked terrorism in Spain and the action of ETA.
