Extracts from the first press conference by Jacques Delors, President of the CEC
On 7 January 1985, Jacques Delors, new President of the CEC, held his first press conference. On 4 December 1984, the representatives of the Governments of the Member States, meeting within the European Council, appointed by common accord the Members of the European Commission of the European Communities for the period from 6 January 1985 to 5 January 1989, and appointed Jacques Delors as President of the European Commission for the period from 6 January 1985 to 5 January 1987. Despite the magnitude of the tasks that await the new Commission, both in the short and long term, Jacques Delors refused to pay into "Europessimism". He added that he would not make reckless promises, preferring caution and knowing the difficulties and problems of the EEC. He also expressed the wish to see the strengthening of the European Monetary System. He insisted on the need for each Member State to focus on its contribution to Europe instead of thinking about what Europe can bring to it, in order to put in place creative solutions while taking into account the financial limits of Europe.
