The JRC Water Laboratory develops and uses state-of-the-art approaches to extract information from water enhancing our understanding of its quality, uses, and risks and informing EU policy. It serves as a vital asset in tackling the European water crisis by fostering innovative solutions such as water-reuse, wastewater surveillance and by being the cornerstone of the European Water Academy - a flagship action under the remit of the European Water Resilience Strategy that the JRC coordinates and leads scientifically.
Equipped with advanced instrumentation (more info at Water Laboratory - Joint Research Centre - European Commission), the JRC Water Laboratory performs targeted screening analyses for known contaminants, as well as non-targeted analyses for unknown contaminants; such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as well as antimicrobial resistance and pathogens of concern. These approaches support environmental monitoring programmes, citizen science initiatives, and enable the development of advanced methods to track pollution trends, strengthen regulatory compliance, and promote sustainable water management under the One Health framework.
