Visit of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to Cyprus
On 23 and 24 April 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, went to Ayia Napa and Nicosia, in Cyprus, to attend an informal meeting of the European Council organised under the Cypriot Presidency of the EU. The summit featured strategic discussions with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, regarding the release of a €90 billion loan for Ukraine and the formal opening of the negotiation chapters for its accession. In Nicosia, she also chaired a consultative meeting with regional partners (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan) to discuss stability in the Middle East and energy security.
