On 11 and 12 January 2026, Andrius Kubilius, European Commissioner for Defence and Space, went to Sälen, in Sweden, where he met with King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, and participated to the Society and Defence conference, the theme was ‘Resolve and delivery’. At the conference, Kubilius emphasized the need for a transformative approach to European defense during his keynote speech on the "Europe under Pressure" panel. He advocated for an "intellectual big bang" and a "radical shift," proposing the creation of a unified European military force of 100,000 troops to counteract the current fragmentation of national armies. He underscored the importance of achieving greater European autonomy in defense, especially given the unpredictability of future US security commitments. Additionally, he called for the establishment of a European Security Council to expedite decision-making processes in defense matters. He also participated in several bilateral meetings.
