On 10 June 2024, Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Europe fit for the Digital Age, travelled to Kajaani, Finland, to participate in the launch event of the Destination Earth (DestinE) project.

This flagship initiative of the Commission aims to develop a highly accurate digital twin of the Earth. Deployment of the DestinE project means that the Europe's High-performance computers (EuroHPC), including the LUMI supercomputer in Kajaani, have been tasked to simulate the effects of climate change and extreme weather events, by the use of computer modelling and artificial intelligence. Thanks to this initiative, Europe will be better prepared to respond to major natural disasters, adapt to climate change and assess the potential socioeconomic and policy impacts of such events.
