EU solidarity with Ukraine - Moldova
As of writing, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has forced over 4 million Ukrainian refugees to flee to neighboring states, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Refugees arriving in Poland, Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania are in dire need of assistance. These people, the majority of whom are women and children, have been stripped of their basic needs such as housing, water, education and health care. In light of the escalating humanitarian crisis, the European Commission has mobilised a considerable amount of resources to assist Ukrainians who have been affected by the war, both in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries. Alongside a commitment to spend an additional €90 million on humanitarian aid programmes for civilians, the EU is coordinating the transport of emergency provisions to Ukraine via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. As of 4 March 2022, 27 European countries have offered over 145 tonnes of provisions, estimated to be valued well over €100 million. These supplies include medical equipment and shelter items, to specialised equipment and vehicles.
