On 29 April 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, took part in a plenary debate at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on the EU’s strategy regarding the crisis in the Middle East and its impact on energy prices and the availability of fertilisers. She called for a reduction in the EU’s energy dependence and for the transition to clean and sustainable energy sources to be accelerated. She reaffirmed the EU’s support for Ukraine and highlighted the impact of sanctions against Russia. Finally, she emphasised the need to strengthen European coordination and to mobilise new resources to fund the EU’s strategic priorities.
