Press conference by Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC, on the consequences of the cloud of volcanic ash for the air transport after the eruption of a volcano in Iceland
Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, gave a press conference on the consequences of the air traffic disruptions caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland on 15 April. Before the press conference, Siim Kallas and the Ministers for Transport of the Union held a meeting via video/audio-conferencing to assess the situation. They agreed on a progressive and coordinated opening of European air space, based on a common scheme which provides for the definition of three zones: a no-fly zone near the ash plume, a zone with small ash concentrations where member states may impose certain flight restrictions, and an ash-free zone without any restrictions.
